Do Christians Need To Go To Church?

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

March 8, 2020

Bible Text: Hebrews 10:19-39 |

Series:

In this sermon we zoom in on verses 24-25 as we ask the question "Are Christians commanded to go to church?"

We answer the question by considering first what Hebrews 10 has to say on the matter, then looking to see what the New Testament as a whole teaches on the matter. Finally, we ask what this means for us today.

The Once For All Sacrifice

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

March 1, 2020

Bible Text: Hebrews 10:1-18 |

Series:

The big point over the last few chapters has been that Jesus is our great high priest. The author has been emphasising the fact that Jesus is the one who truly intercedes between God and humanity and that He is superior to the priests who come before him in the Old Testament because he brings a superior offering. The offerings of the Old Testament were not sufficient to truly clear the conscience of the worshiper, but Jesus does. He deals with sin once and for all. Here, in Hebrews chapter 10, the author zooms in on this particular feature of Christ's priesthood.

Listen in as we consider Hebrews 10's description of the problem of guilt and the solution of sacrifice.

The True Tabernacle – The True Sacrifice

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

February 23, 2020

Bible Text: Hebrews 9:1-28 |

Series:

One of the main themes in the book of Hebrews is that the rituals and practices of the Old Covenant are just a shadow of the reality that is in Jesus Christ. They had deep significance and meaning but they pointed forward beyond themselves to a greater reality - the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In this sermon we consider this idea of shadow and reality using the Tabernacle described in Hebrews 9 as our case study.

Bible Text: Hebrews 6:13-7:28 |

Series:

In this passage we are introduced to the mysterious Biblical character of Melchizedek. As we seek to understand the author's argument that Jesus' priesthood is superior to all other priesthoods and its implications for us today, we ask three questions in this study:
1. Who is Melchizedek?
2. How is Jesus compared to him?
3. Why do we need a priest in the order of Melchizedek?

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

February 2, 2020

Bible Text: Hebrews 5:11-6:12 |

Series:

Although this warning passage in the book of Hebrews has been the subject of much discussion and debate throughout the history of the Church, it is also a source of tremendous encouragement to the believer. It deals with the question of whether or not a Christian can lose their salvation.

In trying to understand this controversial passage, in this sermon we ask three basic questions of the text:

1. What does the whole Bible say about losing your salvation?
2. Who is the person described in verses 4-6?
3. What does this mean for Christian assurance of salvation?
