A Theology Of Sex

Sermon Serires: Sex in the City

November 11, 2018

Bible Text: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 |

Series:

Mary Eberstadt describes the sexual revolution as "the destigmatization and demystification of non-marital sex and the reduction of sexual relations in general to a kind of hygienic recreation in which anything goes so long as those involved are consenting adults.”

For the most part sex has come to be seen as not much more than a basic biological appetite. In the same way that you get hungry for food, you get hungry for sex and so we really shouldn’t assign much more metaphysical value to the act of sex than that. So long as sex is legal, consensual and safe we should engage in it as often as we want, with whomever we want, in whatever way we want. This is in stark contrast to older traditional societies that often viewed sex as a rather base necessary evil used for procreation. In these societies sex was spoken about in hushed tones, and extensively regulated. Many people think the Bible has a view of sex akin to those older traditional societies. But does it really? That's what we explore in this sermon as we lay out a theology of sex.

I Am The Way And The Truth And The Life

Sermon Series - I Am

September 30, 2018

Bible Text: John 13:33 - 14:7 |

Series:

We begin a new series looking at the true identity of Jesus by considering his "I am" statements. We start by looking at the most famous "I am" statement: "I am the way, the truth, and the life." What does Jesus mean when he says that? For many people this saying pertains only to personal salvation, but it seems, from the context, that Jesus doesn't just want to save his hearers, he wants to completely transform the way they view the world and the way they live their lives. Listen in as we explore this famous saying together.

Husbands and Wives

Sermon Series - The household of God

September 9, 2018

Bible Text: Ephesians 5:21-33 |

Series:

Our present culture is extremely wary of gender roles in any shape or form. The biggest reason for that is the abuse suffered by women at the hands of men throughout history. In many societies and in many religious contexts, for thousands of years, women have been seen as, and treated as, inferior to men. There is therefore, good motive behind the current critique of gender roles. And because women are still oppressed and treated unfairly in so many contexts there is a sense of urgency to this issue. It’s crucial then, that we try very carefully, and with much humility, to see what the Bible does and doesn’t say about gender roles in marriage. Listen in as we explore Paul's instructions to husbands and wives in Ephesians 5:21-33.

Breaking Barriers

Ephesians - sermon series

June 3, 2018

Bible Text: Ephesians 2:11-22 |

Series:

How do you deal with deep-seated hostility between different groups of people? Our country is one with a history of such hostility. A long history of racial segregation and apartheid created many barriers between different groups that persist up to the present day. Does Scripture speak to such issues? In Ephesians 2:11-22 we get to see how Paul applies the gospel work of Christ to deep historic hostilities that existed between Jews and Gentiles. By studying his words we can learn much about how the gospel tears down the wall of hostility in our churches today, creating a new humanity made up of a racially and ethnically diverse group of people.

Knowing God

Ephesians - sermon series

May 20, 2018

Bible Text: Ephesians 1:15-23 |

Series:

What do you pray for when you pray? What are you chief priorities in prayer?

The things we pray about say a lot about the depth of our spiritual maturity. RoRobert Murray McCheyne once said: "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is, and nothing more."

In this passage we see one of Paul's most famous prayer, and we get to see his main priority - that we would know God better.

In this sermon we ask two questions: why pray to know God better, and what particularly about God should we be knowing better?

This is the second sermon in our Ephesians sermon. Unfortunately there is no recording of the sermon for Ephesians 1:1-14.

May 6, 2018

Bible Text: Revelation 21:1-10 |

Series:

This is the fourth sermon in our series, "Heaven", as we answer the question "What happens when we die?" In this talk we consider the idea of the future new heaven and earth as described in Revelation 21.

We all have questions about heaven and what happens when we die?
Heaven is incredibly misunderstood by people both outside and within the church. We hope that this series will help to add clarity to our thinking in terms of what the Bible actually says about heaven and answer some of the nagging questions we all have.
