Idolatry

You have searched me, LORD, and you know me

My name is Stephen, I’m the pastor of a small church in the Cape Town CBD. Yes, a pastor! That means I spend a lot of time teaching people about the Christian faith. Maybe it’s incredulous to you that educated modern people still believe in the existence of a divine being. Or maybe you think there might be a God out there, but your doubt often gets the better of you. Well, I doubt too. Often actually. If you’d allow me, I’d like to, in the midst of my doubt, share my story of belief with you. I want to try and answer this question: If I made the decision to leave the Christian faith tomorrow, what things would bug me, or haunt me, at the back of my mind, as to whether or not I had made the right decision? In this talk I consider whether or not the Bible effectively diagnoses the human condition.

Idolatry

May 21, 2017

Bible Text: Exodus 20:1-17 |

Series:

This is the first sermon in the series "When Good Become God". In this series we make the case that you cannot truly know yourself without understanding how idolatry works. In order to defend that claim, we spend some time defining what idolatry is and then demonstrating how idolatry explains our lives.

In this talk we tackle the issue of idolatry by defining it and asking three questions:
What constitutes an idol?
How do I know what my idol is?
Why is it so bad to have an idol?

In the rest of the sermon series we tackle some common concrete examples of idolatry in our personal lives.

“Lobola-ectomy”

February 7, 2016

Bible Text: 1 Samuel 18 |

Series:

In undoubtedly the weirdest story in the Bible, King Saul demands a bride price from the king-to-be, David, for his daughter's hand in marriage. Not money, not cows, none of those things - he demands 100 foreskins! David, being ever so eager to be married outdoes himself, and presents the king with 200 foreskins, just to make sure he's secured the girl. Yes, completely normal, I know. Have a listen to find out what on earth is going on here, and why living under the mastery of anything other than Jesus Christ might leave you having to “pay in foreskins”.

Jesus Goes To Church 3: Pergamum

Jesus goes to church

May 25, 2014

Bible Text: Revelation 2:12-17 |

Sex and drunken revelry - that was part of what regular idol worship looked like in the ancient city of Pergamum. This idolatrous culture proved to be a tricky place for Christians to inhabit and remain faithful. In the letter to the church in that city, Jesus tackles the culture head on, and shows how it's deepest longings, for sustenance and intimacy, can only be fulfilled in him.
