The Son Of David

Sermon Series - Advent 2018

December 2, 2018

Bible Text: Matthew 1:1-17 |

Series:

The ancestry of Jesus is hugely significant revealing to us who Jesus is, and what he's come to do. The gospel writer, Matthew, outlines a lengthy genealogy to establish the ancestry of Jesus. At first glance it's just a long list of hard to pronounce names, but on closer inspection a wonderful picture of the true identity of Jesus begins to emerge. Listen in as we explore the ancestry of Jesus in this sermon on the first Sunday of Advent.

I Am The Resurrection And The Life

Sermon Series - I Am

October 21, 2018

Bible Text: John 11:17-44 |

Series:

In John 11 we encounter Jesus's statement "I am the resurrection and life". In some of the other "I AM" statements we have considered in this short sermon series Jesus uses clever contextual metaphors like light and bread to powerfully convey the meaning of what he is saying. This time, however, it is the very stuff of human suffering and death itself that provides the backdrop for his radical claim. In this passage we catch a glimpse of people responding to suffering in their lives, but even more importantly, we see a clear picture of God's own response to suffering and death that offers us a real hope for life in a broken world.

I Am The Light Of The World

Sermon Series - I Am

October 14, 2018

Bible Text: John 8:12-20 |

Series:

In this passage Jesus makes the claim that he is the light of the world and that only by following him can we know the light of life, or conversely, that by not following him we are lost in darkness. Jesus's claim about himself has very real and unavoidable implications for those who hear it. "Who does Jesus think he is to put us in such a position?" we might instinctively ask in defence. Well, that's precisely the point of this sermons series - who does Jesus think he is? And if his claims are true, what are the implications for us who hear them. In this passage we consider Christ's claim and his call, and discover how this is in fact good news for all who will hear and believe.

Knowing God

Ephesians - sermon series

May 20, 2018

Bible Text: Ephesians 1:15-23 |

Series:

What do you pray for when you pray? What are you chief priorities in prayer?

The things we pray about say a lot about the depth of our spiritual maturity. RoRobert Murray McCheyne once said: "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is, and nothing more."

In this passage we see one of Paul's most famous prayer, and we get to see his main priority - that we would know God better.

In this sermon we ask two questions: why pray to know God better, and what particularly about God should we be knowing better?

This is the second sermon in our Ephesians sermon. Unfortunately there is no recording of the sermon for Ephesians 1:1-14.

The Suffering Servant

Ancient Grace - sermon series

March 25, 2018

Bible Text: Isaiah 52:13-53:12 |

Series:

This sermon is the sixth and last in our series Ancient Grace.

Where does the story of Jesus start in the Bible? How you answer that question is going to shape the way you read and understand most of your Bible, particularly the Old Testament. The contention of this sermon series, Ancient Grace, is that the whole Bible, even the Old Testament is actually all about Jesus - about God's grace to us in sending us a Saviour to save us from our sin.

In this sermon we consider Isaiah 53 and it's prophetic portrayal of Jesus as The Suffering Servant.

Grace Abounds

August 6, 2017

Bible Text: Romans 5:12-21 |

Series:

In Romans 5, Paul speaks of the Christian's hope of glory. Many times we feel that our failings and sin are just too much too bear, often leaving us feeling very insecure in our relationship with God and our chances of every seeing His promised glory. In this passage, Paul shows us that even though our problem of sin is actually greater than we often realise, the redemptive grace he offers us in Jesus Christ is greater still - and the only real basis for our confidence as Christians.

In this series, we are hoping to help instill confidence in the God of the Bible by walking through Romans chapters 5-8, seeing how Paul teaches us the great reason Jesus gives us for having great confidence in God. Your confidence in God is going to swell, because your expectations of God are going to be rightly set and your experience of God is going to match up to those expectations.

The Narrow Door

March 19, 2017

Bible Text: Luke 13:22-30 |

Series:

In this sermon we take a look at Jesus's response to the question of how many people are going to be saved and end up with God in the Kingdom at the end of human history?"

About the sermon series:

In Luke 9:51, after spending 9 chapters telling us who Jesus is, Luke, the author, tells us this one very important detail: “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” Just earlier in that same chapter the lights went on for the disciples and they began, imperfectly, to realise that Jesus was the Messiah, God’s king sent to redeem his people. Following that revelation Jesus takes them even further in their understanding of himself and his mission, and he tells them that he’s going to be handed over to the authorities and die at their hand. In fulfillment of that prediction he resolutely heads to Jerusalem to face his death.

The Gospel according to Daniel

February 19, 2017

Bible Text: Daniel 6:1-28 |

Series:

This is the sixth and final sermon in our series entitled Inside the Lion's Den. We've been looking at what it means to live faithfully as a Christian in a world that doesn't seem to follow God's agenda.

Daniel 6 brings up many of the same themes we have encountered in the preceding chapters. Daniel has taught us how, on occasion, to draw lines and oppose the culture on the basis of our faith convictions. It has taught us when to embrace the culture and all that is good in the culture around us. It has taught us how to cope when big powerful forces above us push us down and threaten to squash us. It has taught us, most of all, that if you are God's child, he will be with you through this entire ordeal.

In this talk we see how Daniel 6 teaches us the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ, because at the heart of all we have covered so far in this series is the truth that God rescues.
