Jesus

The Suffering Servant

Ancient Grace - sermon series

March 25, 2018

Bible Text: Isaiah 52:13-53:12 |

Series:

This sermon is the sixth and last in our series Ancient Grace.

Where does the story of Jesus start in the Bible? How you answer that question is going to shape the way you read and understand most of your Bible, particularly the Old Testament. The contention of this sermon series, Ancient Grace, is that the whole Bible, even the Old Testament is actually all about Jesus - about God's grace to us in sending us a Saviour to save us from our sin.

In this sermon we consider Isaiah 53 and it's prophetic portrayal of Jesus as The Suffering Servant.

Grace Abounds

August 6, 2017

Bible Text: Romans 5:12-21 |

Series:

In Romans 5, Paul speaks of the Christian's hope of glory. Many times we feel that our failings and sin are just too much too bear, often leaving us feeling very insecure in our relationship with God and our chances of every seeing His promised glory. In this passage, Paul shows us that even though our problem of sin is actually greater than we often realise, the redemptive grace he offers us in Jesus Christ is greater still - and the only real basis for our confidence as Christians.

In this series, we are hoping to help instill confidence in the God of the Bible by walking through Romans chapters 5-8, seeing how Paul teaches us the great reason Jesus gives us for having great confidence in God. Your confidence in God is going to swell, because your expectations of God are going to be rightly set and your experience of God is going to match up to those expectations.

The Narrow Door

March 19, 2017

Bible Text: Luke 13:22-30 |

Series:

In this sermon we take a look at Jesus's response to the question of how many people are going to be saved and end up with God in the Kingdom at the end of human history?"

About the sermon series:

In Luke 9:51, after spending 9 chapters telling us who Jesus is, Luke, the author, tells us this one very important detail: “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” Just earlier in that same chapter the lights went on for the disciples and they began, imperfectly, to realise that Jesus was the Messiah, God’s king sent to redeem his people. Following that revelation Jesus takes them even further in their understanding of himself and his mission, and he tells them that he’s going to be handed over to the authorities and die at their hand. In fulfillment of that prediction he resolutely heads to Jerusalem to face his death.

The Gospel according to Daniel

February 19, 2017

Bible Text: Daniel 6:1-28 |

Series:

This is the sixth and final sermon in our series entitled Inside the Lion's Den. We've been looking at what it means to live faithfully as a Christian in a world that doesn't seem to follow God's agenda.

Daniel 6 brings up many of the same themes we have encountered in the preceding chapters. Daniel has taught us how, on occasion, to draw lines and oppose the culture on the basis of our faith convictions. It has taught us when to embrace the culture and all that is good in the culture around us. It has taught us how to cope when big powerful forces above us push us down and threaten to squash us. It has taught us, most of all, that if you are God's child, he will be with you through this entire ordeal.

In this talk we see how Daniel 6 teaches us the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ, because at the heart of all we have covered so far in this series is the truth that God rescues.

Lamentations 4

Lamentation - Hope in the Darkness

April 20, 2014

Bible Text: Lamentations 4:1-22 |

Series:

Old Testament Professor, Gordon McConville writes, "An important part of God's intention in bringing the state of Judah to an end was to show that he himself was the only proper object of the people's trust.

Lamentations stands as a witness against false trust in any institution, including a church, for salvation." No poem in the collection reflects that more than the poem in chapter 4. In this sermon we look at the issue of trust, the consequences of misplacing it, and the reason why our relationship with God alone should be our ultimate trust relationship in life.

Lamentation - Hope in the Darkness

April 6, 2014

Bible Text: Lamentations 3:1-66 |

In some ways the concept of hope is the very foundation upon which our continuing existence, as human beings, is based. Here, in the middle of the book of Lamentations we find a reason to hope in the midst of desolation and darkness, a reason to lift our eyes above the despair.

Lamentations 1

Lamentation - Hope in the Darkness

March 16, 2014

Bible Text: Lamentations 1:1-22 |

Series:

Sin is generally a difficult issue to talk about in our culture – not primarily because our culture doesn't believe in sin – actually more because our culture can't agree on the definitions and boundaries of sin. In this study on the first chapter of Lamentations we look at how the Bible conceives of sin and try and make sense of it's definitions within a culture that is largely amoral and pluralistic.

The Feast of the Father (The Prodigal God 5)

February 23, 2014

Bible Text: Luke 15:11-32 |

Series:

We have looked at the story of the younger brother, then we put it into its context with the story of the elder brother. Then we put the story of the two brothers into the context of the whole chapter. Each time we saw another important part of Jesus’ message. But we are not quite done. We need to see the story in the context of the whole Bible. Jesus was immersed in the
Scriptures, and in this story he is giving us the essence of the whole Biblical storyline in one vivid narrative. If we see that, we will get a 30,000 foot view of what the Bible is all about. We learn about 1) the human condition, 2) the divine solution, and 3) the new communion.
