The Once For All Sacrifice

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

March 1, 2020

Bible Text: Hebrews 10:1-18 |

Series:

The big point over the last few chapters has been that Jesus is our great high priest. The author has been emphasising the fact that Jesus is the one who truly intercedes between God and humanity and that He is superior to the priests who come before him in the Old Testament because he brings a superior offering. The offerings of the Old Testament were not sufficient to truly clear the conscience of the worshiper, but Jesus does. He deals with sin once and for all. Here, in Hebrews chapter 10, the author zooms in on this particular feature of Christ's priesthood.

Listen in as we consider Hebrews 10's description of the problem of guilt and the solution of sacrifice.

The True Tabernacle – The True Sacrifice

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

February 23, 2020

Bible Text: Hebrews 9:1-28 |

Series:

One of the main themes in the book of Hebrews is that the rituals and practices of the Old Covenant are just a shadow of the reality that is in Jesus Christ. They had deep significance and meaning but they pointed forward beyond themselves to a greater reality - the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In this sermon we consider this idea of shadow and reality using the Tabernacle described in Hebrews 9 as our case study.

The Cost of Following Jesus

Hope City

July 7, 2019

Bible Text: Luke 9:57-62 |

Series:

What is the cost of following Jesus? This passage details three conversations with three different people about what it would mean for them to truly follow Him. As we listen in on each one, we discover that Jesus demands that we follow Him in a way that we don't follow anyone or anything else in this life, and that the only way we can follow Him like this is when we see that Jesus is unlike and more precious than anyone or anything in life.

Jesus the Final Word – Part 2

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

June 9, 2019

Bible Text: Hebrews 1:1-4 |

Series:

In part 1 of our study in these opening four verses of Hebrews we saw how God has spoken definitely to humanity in his son, Jesus Christ.

In most things in life, the credentials of someone speaking authoritatively on a subject are crucial. In these four verses, the author, after telling us that God has spoken, stops and outlines the credentials of the one through whom he has spoken.

When we look at the credentials of Jesus we see God in his glory, and we see God in his gracious holiness.

Jesus the Final Word – Part 1

Sermon Series: Jesus is Better - Studies in Hebrews

June 2, 2019

Bible Text: Hebrews 1:1-4 |

Series:

It's hard to think of a more perplexing problem than human existence. Why are we here? Where do we come from? What are we supposed to be doing with this existence that we have?

Is there a definitive word that ends all the 'ifs', the 'buts', and the 'maybes'?

The opening verses of Hebrews make a bold claim - that Jesus is God's definitive word.

This is part of 1 of our study on these verses. In it we consider the author's claim that God speaks, God has spoken, and that God has now spoken.

“…the clearest evidence would be requisite to make any sane man believe…”

My name is Stephen, I’m the pastor of a small church in the Cape Town CBD. Yes, a pastor! That means I spend a lot of time teaching people about the Christian faith. Maybe it’s incredulous to you that educated modern people still believe in the existence of a divine being. Or maybe you think there might be a God out there, but your doubt often gets the better of you. Well, I doubt too. Often actually. If you’d allow me, I’d like to, in the midst of my doubt, share my story of belief with you. I want to try and answer this question: If I made the decision to leave the Christian faith tomorrow, what things would bug me, or haunt me, at the back of my mind, as to whether or not I had made the right decision? In this talk I consider the historical evidence for the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Drawing Lines

Sermon Series: The King of God's Kingdom

March 31, 2019

Bible Text: Mark 4:1-20 |

Series:

Religion can be a very polarising subject. The charge is often leveled that specific religions divide between who's in and who's out according to their doctrine or practices. Rather than producing peace and social harmony religion is then seen as a source of conflict. In Mark 4 we encounter Jesus drawing lines between different types of people. How do we make sense of this potentially polarising action on his behalf. Listen in as we explore the line that Jesus draws through the human race and how we might think about that in our contemporary culture.
